The state of Maine is not known for tornadoes, but we do see a few each year.
And even though tornadoes in Maine are generally less severe than ones in other parts of the U.S., especially the area known as Tornado Alley, they can still be dangerous.
But has there ever been a deadly tornado in Maine?
We'll answer that question, but first, a little more on what tornadoes are like in Maine.
How often do tornadoes occur in Maine?
The Maine Emergency Management Agency says the state averages two tornadoes every year.
According to MEMA, 74 tornadoes occurred in Maine between 1950 and 1990, less than 2 per year.
Are tornadoes really less severe in Maine?
Yes. Compared to certain part of the country, tornadoes in Maine are generally less powerful and destructive.
MEMA says that tornadoes in Maine generally tend to touch down and lift off the ground very quickly, and the state doesn't see a lot of tornado-related property damage and injuries because Maine has a sparse population.
Has there ever been a deadly tornado in Maine?
Yes. There was at least one known fatal tornado that occurred in Maine.
According to the National Weather Service, it happened on August 11, 1954, when an F2 tornado struck nine miles north of Caribou.
The Weather Service says two barns were destroyed and one house was thrown into another, claiming the life of one person.

So there aren't many tornadoes in Maine each year, and compared to other places, they aren't as destructive as they are in our state.
