There are 15 Maine Foods Every Mainer Needs to Try At Least Once

If there are any foods on this list that you've never tried even once, I'm not sure you can call yourself a true Mainer.

Okay, that's an overstatement. And let me clarify that you don't have to love or even like the foods on this list. But they're so iconic to Maine that I think knowing how they taste is part of living here. It was tough to narrow the list to just fifteen items because there are so many amazing Maine flavors.

Some Maine Flavors Are so Iconic, Every Resident Must Have Tried Them

I didn't include blueberries, even though 99% of Wild Blueberries consumed across the U.S. come from Maine.

Maple Syrup is also not on the list, even though sugar houses and Maine Maple Weekends are a way of life. I felt that everyone must have enjoyed a slice of blueberry pie and put maple syrup on their pancakes, so I decided to leave them off the list.

Seafood, other than lobster, is another item I neglected to add. There are so many different varieties in Maine, they deserve a list of their own, plus not everyone can eat seafood, including shellfish.

Maine has Signature Foods Just Like Other States, Like California and Florida

But when I meet someone from California, I expect that they've eaten an avocado at some point in their life. Same with a Floridian and oranges, or an Idahoan and potatoes.

So check out my list and make a note of any foods that you've never tried. Be a true Mainer and give them a taste. If you don't like them, no one's going to hold it against you. We'll just mention, quietly, that you don't know what you're missing, Bub.
