Adults and kids can walk, run, have fun, and raise money with the Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe 5K.

Ronald McDonald Houses Offer Homey Experiences to Families of Sick Children

Maine has two Ronald McDonald Houses, in Bangor and Portland. They serve as a place where parents with children being treated at local hospitals can stay free of charge. Each family that stays overnight in a Ronald McDonald House has a private room and bath and can enjoy meals in their room or with other guests, as a family-style dining experience. They even have access to the kitchen for snacking. And there's no limit on how long a family can stay. It's like being at home when you're not at home.

Ronald McDonald Houses offer more than a place to stay, however. They're also places where families can bond with others who may be in similar circumstances. Talking to someone who understands the fear and frustration of a sick child can be supportive and healing.

Fundraising is a Big Part of Keeping the Houses Running

The charity is backed by donations made at McDonald's restaurants but is primarily funded through private donations and fundraising events. Donations can be made directly on the Ronald McDonald House Charities website, where you can also find a link to their Amazon wishlists of immediately needed items to keep the houses running.

The Next Event is in August and It's a Fun Run & Walk for All Ages

Something new this year on their fundraising calendar is the Red Shoe 5K Run & Walk. Named for Ronald McDonald's red shoes, organizers assured me that footwear of any color would be acceptable. There are several ways to take part on August 10, 2024, at Husson University in Bangor:

• Red Shoe 5K Run
• Red Shoe 5K Walk
• Virtual Red Shoe 5K Run and Walk
• Red Shoe Kids 1 Mile
• Red Shoe Kids Fun Run
