Maine Rocket Company Looking For Launch Site in Washington County

Downeast Maine may become home to a spaceport.

The Brunswick-based rocket company, bluShift Aerospace, is scouting possible locations for a new launch site. The company successfully launched a rocket-powered by biofuel back in January. It was the first rocket in the world to be launched using bio-derived fuel, and Maine's first commercial rocket launch. The rocket launched from Loring Commerce Centre, in Limestone. Now the company is eyeing a new launch site, possibly in the Downeast area.

According to Spectrum News, bluShift Aerospace is scouting for a launch site in Washington County, possibly an island on the Maine coast. CEO Sascha Deri says a coastal launch location is needed so a rocket can fly in a southerly direction, over the ocean. The route sends the rocket into a polar orbit. Potential launch sites were not mentioned in the article.

bluShift Aerospace launched in 2014. In 2019, the company received $124,999 in funding from NASA. Their goal is to commercially send research satellites into polar orbits around the earth. Potential clients could include NOAA and NASA.
