For a lot of people a good tan is more than just looking good, it's a confidence booster. A good tan makes people feel better about themselves and the way they look.

But apparently some Mainers get started too early in life which has been linked to some kinds of skin cancer and other health problems later in life.

On Thursday Governor Janet Mills signed a bill into law prohibiting Maine's youth from using tanning beds, the Associated Press reports. Maine is the 17th state to implement such a ban so far.

Some critics say the new bill will hurt local tanning businesses but supporters of the bill cite research showing over exposure to ultraviolet light happening more commonly in teens which could increase the chance of skin cancer later on in life, MainePublic.org reports.
