A Maine man is facing charges after a young teen was found unconscious in a ditch after being hit by a vehicle.

Eliot Police Say an Elderly Man is Accused in the Hit-and-Run Crash

Leon Benton, 82, of Eliot is charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. He's due in court in April.

The 13-year-old Victim Was Found Unconscious in a Ditch in Eliot

The charges stem from an investigation that began just before 4:00 Wednesday afternoon when Eliot Police were notified of a 13-year-old girl found unconscious in a ditch. Officials say an examination of the girl's injuries and the scene indicated that she had been hit by a vehicle. Officers recovered vehicle debris and canvassed the surrounding neighborhood, looking for the person responsible. A short time later, the police located the vehicle and the person that was allegedly driving at the time of the incident.

Maine Hit-and-Run Victim Was Taken to a New Hampshire Hospital

Eliot Police say the teen sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital for treatment. Her name and the extent of her injuries have not been released.
