Two days of heavy rainfall in Jackman has caused a culvert to fail and part of Route 6/15 has washed away.

Maine Department of Transportation has set up a detour. Here’s why

However, this is no mile down one road onto another detour.

The detour takes Route 201 to Bingham and Route 16 in Abbot for a grand total of 143 miles out of your way.

143 miles.

And Maine DOT estimates 800 vehicles use Route 6/15, many are trucks.

The Department will continue to assess the situation and come up with Plan B, but did not release an estimated time as to how long this section of Route 6/15 will be out of commission.

For those of us in the Greater Bangor area, here’s how far 143 miles is.

Go east 143 miles and you’ll hit the Bay of Fundy.

Southwest of Bangor will get you to Kittery, York, Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, Maine or Portsmouth, New Hampshire give or take a couple of miles.

Go due west that distance and you’ll get a welcome to the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. Hello Mount Washington.

No small inconvenience for Jackman and the surrounding area.

Here's to a solution that happens sooner rather than later. And send some of that rain our way, if you would.
