Firefighters; they're often the men and women who show up ready to do the dirty work of fighting fires and rescuing people, typically in the most dire and devastating of conditions.

As they say, it takes a special breed of person to run towards the danger. But what a lot of folks may take for granted, is that these men and women, while made of something perhaps a little different than what we are made of, are simply folks living alongside us here, in our communities.

In an effort to help the Bangor community get to know some of these brave men and women a little better,  the Bangor Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 772 started a special series this month on their social media page. The series introduces us to some of the local Bangor firefighters and lets us know, in their own words why it is they do what they do.

"Here in Bangor, we have seen a lot of adversity lately. Overtime, running short, long days and short nights. Regardless of the difficulty, the Bangor Professional Firefighters keep coming in and doing what needs to be done for the city and citizens in Bangor. We often hear "I don't know how you do it."

With this in mind, we want to share our firefighters' own words about what drives them and how they come to love this calling."

Many of these firefighters speak of the amazing bonds of brotherhood they have with their fellow crew members, and of the loyalty and support they find in these working relationships.

Others say they enjoy that the job provides them the opportunity to learn new skills, but is also so very different from day to day.

And each example is pretty telling as to the caliber of individuals who make up our local firefighting companies.

For instance, 12-year Bangor Fire Department veteran, Lieutenant Miah Titus says:

"I love being able to put on this uniform knowing what it represents to people. They know we are there for THEM and because of that, they trust us with their lives.

We get to live in a city we make better through our own actions and I get to carry these good memories with me forever."
