In the past few years, a lot has changed for her. The bakery business has blossomed. She got married and changed her name. These days, Devon Hawes (as she's now called) is helping her new husband, Brian (aka Farmer Hawes), with a farm, too.
While it would seem like life is all sunshine and roses for the new couple, things took an interesting turn for them this weekend. That's when folks from the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office showed up on their doorstep on the evening of Saturday, August 30th, quite concerned...at first.

Hawes says authorities were there to investigate the area because someone had called in a report stating that they'd heard something that sounded like a female shouting in distress near the Hawes' Etna home on Lakins Rd.
"As Farmer and I are relaxing, around 8:30, we hear a very authoritative knock on the door. Farmer goes out.....then comes back in with a little smile....I ask what's going on, and he says, 'It's Simon. The sheriff is here because a call came in from the village reporting a woman screaming for help.' Apparently, the sheriff had been patrolling down the railroad tracks looking for someone needing help.....then he traced to 'screaming' to our house."
The culprit, however, was not an injured or distressed woman in need of help or rescue, but a new member of the farm fold...a "screaming" goat named Simon.
"Farmer brought him out back to the barn, where he met Simon and confirmed that we did in fact not have anyone screaming for help, that it was just our goat."
"We took him to the barn and introduced him to Simon. Case closed."
The couple posted this video on social media to show all just how loud this little guy can get!
"Simon is definitely the most vocal one in the group! Especially at dinner time (and when the females are in heat). The last few weeks, he's been especially vocal.....unfortunately, some days starting at 5 AM. "
Altogether, Hawes says the couple has a total of 8 goats, including Simon, Butterscotch, Sprout, Alfredo, Daisy& BoRoger (to name a few), and they are hoping to expand their little goat herd.
As is often the case when folks aren't familiar with certain animal sounds (Have you ever heard a rabbit or a deer screaming in the wild? It's terrifying!), sometimes those noises can resemble, in the eeriest of ways, the sounds people make. And since you can never be too sure, the concerned citizen absolutely did the right thing by calling it in, just in case there was something to it.
However, in this situation, not only was it a relief that there was no one in danger or in need, but what a great chuckle everyone was able to have as a result of this "goat guffaw"!
