So far, there has been no buzz about a Trader Joe's coming to the Bangor area, but could something else be coming to compete for your grocery shopping dollar?

Market Basket started as a small family grocery in Massachusetts, way back in 197 and has grown into a favorite across New England. They’re known for big selections, fresh produce, and everyday low prices, no loyalty cards, just good deals.

The success of this business is no fluke, Market Basket was recently ranked as the second-best grocery store chain in the country, for the second straight year.

Compared to Hannaford or Shaw’s, Market Basket usually feels more budget‑friendly and straightforward. Hannaford leans into local and specialty items, and Shaw’s can be pricier, but Market Basket keeps it simple, with lots of choices, fair prices, and friendly staff, which is why fans get excited whenever a new store pops up.

Market Basket has been steadily expanding their its presence in Maine over the past decade. Today the chain operates three stores in the state, with locations in Westbrook, Biddeford, and Topsham

They are set to open a fourth Maine location in the fall of this year, at The Downs in Scarborough. The 80,000-square-foot store will be located at the corner of Market Street and Scarborough Downs Road, within the Town Center development, featuring more than 50,000 products.
