Injured Teen Rescued From Appalachian Trail Wilderness
A teenage hiker on the Appalachian Trail had to be rescued yesterday after breaking his leg in a fall.
Maine Warden Corporal John MacDonald says wardens were notified at about noon Wednesday that a hiker had broken his leg when he lost his footing and fell. 16-year-old Johan Cordoba of Montreal, Canada was located between Third and Fourth Mountains on the Appalachian Trial in T7 R9 NWP Township. That's about 15 miles east of Greenville.
Cordoba was hiking with a group of ten others, including two camp counselors with Camp Tekakwitha, out of Leeds, Maine. The group was about halfway through their 18-mile hike of Maine's 100-Mile Wilderness when the teen lost his footing on a downhill portion of the trail. The councilors called for help and game wardens from the Greenville area contacted the Appalachian Mountain Club for assistance in the rescue.
Wilderness first aid treatment was administered before he was carried out by wardens and AMC members to a landing strip near Third Mountain. A Maine Forest Service helicopter was dispatched to take Cordoba to Old Town, where he was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center.
