A Milford Couple is Safe After Fire Consumed Their SUV on I-95

A dramatic car fire on I-95 in Bangor Monday morning stopped traffic until the flames could be extinguished.

An Elderly Couple From Milford Escaped Unharmed

Robert Scott, 82, and his wife, Carolyn Scott, 81, both of Milford, escaped the vehicle unharmed. They were not hurt in the fire.

When Police Arrived, the Vehicle Was Engulfed in Flames

It was just after 10:00 Monday morning when the Maine State Police were called to the southbound lane of I-95 in Veazie for a report of a vehicle fire. When the Troopers arrived, they found a 2016 Kia Sorento, pulled to the side of the highway, fully engulfed in flames. Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says some passersby aided Mr. and Mrs. Scott and were able to help them get out of the car before it became consumed by fire.

Officials Say the Fire Appears to Have Been Due to a Mechanical Issue

An initial investigation into the incident suggests the vehicle may have had brake issues. Mr. Scott told authorities that as he applied the brakes he was initially unable to stop.

No one was hurt in the fire that shut down the interstate for approximately 30 minutes, while the Bangor Fire Department members extinguished the blaze.
