It's a day to honor the mixed-breed dogs in our lives, as we celebrate National Mutt Day.

Why Do We Celebrate Mutts?

There's just something special about a mixed-breed dog. In my opinion, they're happier, friendlier, and snugglier. I have nothing against purebred dogs because they're also beautiful, loyal, and sweet. But, to me, a mutt just tries harder.

Would You Like to Meet Our Mutts?

Jim and I have always had mutts, with one exception. Lola was a beautiful golden retriever who was our only female dog. She was very sweet to us and always loved to snuggle. (think - her head on my face while I was sleeping) But she was also a ferocious protector who killed a skunk faster than it could spray her. Not a lover of other dogs (other than the ones in our house), she was not someone we could take to a dog park.

Then there were our mutts. We had Floyd, the Huskador (husky-labrador retriever mix), who was Jim's dog when I met him. Floyd was a character who adored his family, loved other dogs (especially girl dogs), and had the worst breath you've ever smelled. He loved to wander a bit, so we'd sometimes find him walking down the road all by himself, but he was just looking for another girl willing to spend some time with him. As you can see in the picture (above), Floyd and Lola loved to ride in the car.

Copernicus was my first puppy and was an adorable mix of Jack Russell Terrier and chocolate Labrador Retriever. It was a weird combination achieved with the help of a set of stairs and a frisky male Jack Russell. Pernicus had to say hello to everyone he met. A deer tick took him down far too young. Then there was Gifford, who was also a beautiful mutt and a sweet, sweet boy. He was also taken from us at a young age. We miss both of them but we were so blessed to have had the chance to spoil them, if only for a while.

And now, we have Toby, who is a black and white Pitbull-Labrador Retriever mix. Toby loves every person he meets and will even yelp, while we're stopped at traffic lights, to get people in other cars to smile at him. He's the best boy I've ever met and doesn't fit the stereotype of what people think of Pitbulls. Happy, healthy, friendly, and loyal, that's Toby. We're so lucky he came to live with us.

How Can I Show Appreciation to My Mutt?

If you have a beautiful mixed breed in your life, give them a little chicken today, buy them a pup cup, or just take them for an extra-long walk. Today is their day - National Mutt Day. While you're celebrating, drop a picture of your mutt under the link to this post on the Q-106.5 Facebook page or message them via the Q-106.5 app. We'd love to see them.
