500 to 1K Gallons of Gas Spilled in Hampden by Overturned Tanker
Crews worked to contain a large gas spill in Hampden on Sunday after a tanker truck overturned.
Where Did It Happen?
It was a long day for firefighters and others after an Irving tanker truck rolled over on Carmel Road North before 6:30 Sunday morning and spilled what fire officials estimated to be between 500 to 1,000 gallons of gasoline. Officials say the driver wasn't hurt in the crash and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
How Long Did the Clean-up Take?
It ended up being an all-day operation, with the road closed until just before 6:00 Sunday night as multiple agencies dealt with the clean-up. The spill had to be contained and the gasoline still on the truck had to be off-loaded into another tanker. Then the crashed truck had to be removed from the scene.
According to the Professional Fire Fighters of Hampden, IAFF #4903, they were assisted at the scene by fire departments from Orono, Hermon, and Newburgh, as well as the Maine Air National Guard. Bouchard and Sons Towing, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Gardiner Construction, and Hampden Police were also involved in the clean-up.
Were Area Residents in Any Danger From the Spilled Gas?
Obviously, this would have been a much more dangerous situation if the gas had caught fire.Officials say there's no danger to people living in the area, according to WABI-TV. The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Maine State Police.
