A massive fire at the historic Fryeburg Fairgrounds has destroyed two animal barns and damaged six others.

The Fryeburg Fire Department was called to the fairgrounds just before 6:30 Tuesday night. Once they assessed the fire, departments were called in from several surrounding towns to offer mutual aid. Officials say the mutual aid was needed because of the high heat and the humidity.

Flames destroyed the sheep and cattle barns, which were flattened. Six other barns nearby were also damaged, but not totaled, by the fire. The good news is that there were no animals in the barns and no one was hurt.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office will now work to determine what sparked the blaze.
