Former Calais High School Employee is Under Police Investigation
A former employee of Calais High School is being investigated for alleged inappropriate messages to students.
When Was the Person Employed at Calais High School?
Superintendent of Schools Ron Jenkins says the person at the center of this investigation was hired by the Calais School Department on August 29th, 2022 and then resigned on January 20th, 2023. He says the reasons for the person's resignation were not related to the issues that came to light later and prompted this investigation. The name of the former employee has not been released.
What is He Accused of Doing?
The former employee has allegedly been sending messages to former students via Snapchat and Facebook messenger. According to a letter that was sent to parents of Calais High School students, some of those messages and videos were sexually explicit.
Jenkins says the messages were sent sometime after the former employee's resignation and that he only became aware of them around Memorial Day. Jenkins says the investigation is out of their hands.
He has not been an employee of the Calais school department since January so there is little more we can do.
Calais Police and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services were notified of the alleged messages.
How Should Parents Handle This News?
The Superintendent has asked parents to question their students about whether they received any of the inappropriate messages. If so, he's urging the parents to notify him immediately.
We'll update this story as more details become available.
