An elderly pedestrian in Farmington was killed when he was struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing the street.

An 82-Year-Old from Chesterville Died While Crossing the Street

Robert J. Leso, 82, of Chesterville was trying to cross Main Street in Farmington in a westerly direction when the crash happened.

The Tractor-Trailer Stopped for One Pedestrian, But Didn't See Mr. Leso

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash that happened near the U.S Post Office on Main Street in Farmington revealed that a tractor-trailer owned by MCW Trucking of Durham, Maine and driven by Marcus J. Campbell, 26, of Gray was traveling north on Main Street just as Mr. Leso was trying to cross the street. Farmington Police say Campbell had stopped for a pedestrian that was already in the crosswalk and, when he saw no other pedestrians in the crosswalk, he began to proceed. At the same time, Leso approached from the passenger side of the truck, skirting around the front of the rig apparently out of view of Campbell. Leso was knocked to the ground and run over by the driver's tire.

Witnesses who saw the incident motioned to Campbell to stop and then they, and Campbell, rushed to Leso's aid. Their efforts were not successful, and the 82-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Officials Encourage Eye Contact Between Pedestrian and Driver Before Crossing

Police have reviewed traffic camera footage and interviewed witnesses about the incident. The conclusion is that there was no indication of error on the driver's part and no charges are anticipated. Police Chief Kenneth Charles encourages drivers to slow down, be patient, be aware of their surroundings, and avoid distractions. He says pedestrians and motorists alike should always ensure eye to eye contact before proceeding.

Our condolences to Mr. Leso's family and friends.
