Fairfield Police say an allegedly intoxicated driver fled a vehicular hit and run, only to die in a separate crash.

A Massachusetts Man Died in the Second Crash

Ryan Sargent, 38, of Sterling, Massachusetts died at the scene of the second crash Saturday night.

The Crashes Were About Two Miles Apart

It was approximately 10:17 when members of the Fairfield Police Department responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash on Western Avenue. The driver of the vehicle that had been hit told authorities that the vehicle had veered into her lane, side-swiped her vehicle, and then continued traveling west on Western Avenue in the wrong lane.

While Officers were investigating that crash, they learned of a second crash on Center Road, near box 376, which is about two miles from the hit-and-run. Officer Kibbie arrived on scene immediately and found a Honda Civic that had rolled over and the driver, Ryan Sargent, who had been ejected and was unresponsive. Life saving measures were taken by Officers Kibbie and Dugas until Fairfield Benton Emergency Services and Delta Ambulance personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced Mr. Sargent deceased.

Fairfield Police Say Speed and Alcohol Were Likely Factors

An investigation in the circumstances of the crash determined that Sargent had failed to negotiate a corner before leaving the roadway, where his vehicle rolled over. Fairfield Police say speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash. There were no other injuries due to the rollover and the second operator from the previous crash was also not hurt.
