A man who had an outstanding warrant is now facing additional charges after a police-involved shooting during his arrest.

Where Did This Happen?

Ellsworth Police were originally called to a Water Street residence on Friday night, just after 9:00, for a harassment complaint. On their way to the call, officers learned the person involved in the incident was Jeff Paine, 68, who had a warrant out for his arrest. Paine was wanted for a charge of failure to stop for an officer. Police contacted him and informed him that he had an active warrant.

How Did the Situation Escalate to a Shooting?

Officials say Paine allegedly greeted the officers with a firearm and tried to shut the door on them. He then allegedly fired at the officers, prompting Officer Joshua Steward to fire back. Paine sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. The officers placed him under arrest and administered first aid until paramedics arrived on the scene.

What Charges Does Paine Face?

At the last report, Paine was being treated at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Upon his release, police plan to transport him to the Hancock County Jail where he was be held on a warrant arrest, He will also face additional charges in connection with Friday's incident.

Officer Steward has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for any police-involved shooting.
