It’s never good news when you hear about a business closing its doors, especially knowing the impact it has on employees, the community, and other surrounding businesses. Unfortunately, in 2024 and heading into 2025, this has become a more frequent reality as many businesses face tough economic challenges.

So, which convenience store chain, present throughout our Pine Tree State, is planning to close over 1,000 stores?

According to Intersolar, the major gas retailer Shell plans to close 1,000 retail gas stations between 2024 and 2025 as part of its Energy Transition Strategy 2024. This move reflects the company's shift toward focusing on electric vehicle (EV) services and reallocating resources to support its evolving energy priorities.

At first glance, this might seem like negative news, but Shell is actually shifting its business model heading into the new year and beyond.

Shell is shifting focus from gasoline to EV charging, emphasizing the growing EV market. The company plans to install around 70,000 public charging stations by 2025 and 200,000 by 2030, aligning with its prediction of declining oil demand in the 2030s. Since acquiring Volta in 2023, Shell has expanded to over 3,000 charging points across 31 states, with 3,400 more in development.
