Brewer Crossing Guard Given A Special Gift From A Grateful School
Brewer Community School's Crossing Guard was surprised by a very thoughtful and practical gift that showed up one day at her station.
Brewer's Crossing Guard Once Worked for the Fire Department
Priscilla Gray has had an interesting life. She worked for years as an administrative assistant with the Brewer Fire Department, a job she said she enjoyed. Then she started her career at the school, working in the kitchen before also picking up the Crossing Guard duties. These days, she works exclusively as a Crossing Guard at Brewer Community School and says it's a job she truly loves. And you can tell because she always smiles and says hello, even on the rainiest or coldest days.

The Chair, With Cupholders and Umbrella, Just Showed Up One Day
On Monday, as I sat outside the school waiting for classes to dismiss, I noticed a very comfortable-looking chair now attached to the fence, with an umbrella, and a sign on the back that says 'Mrs. Gray.' I asked her about it and she said it just appeared one day and she wasn't sure who had put it there, but it made her smile.
I just love it. My legs get sore standing all the time and this is very comfortable.
Priscilla told me she didn't know who came up with the idea for the chair but she's very grateful.

Principal Richards Says the Idea for Mrs. Gray's Chair Was a Collaborative Effort
I love a good mystery, so I asked the Principal, Jason Richards, where the chair came from. He said someone on the staff noticed that Priscilla folded a blanket over the steel bike rack to lean on when she didn't have anyone to help cross the street.
We then came up with the chair idea and ran it by our maintenance department to come up with a plan to assemble and secure it so that it would not turn up missing. The maintenance crew added the umbrella idea and one of the our office secretaries created the sign.
He says it was 'absolutely a cooperative idea' between several of the school staff members to thank Priscilla for starting everyone's day off with a smile and a warm greeting.
I'll add my own thanks, Mrs. Gray, for all you do to keep the children safe.
