What started as an investigation into a double shooting in Berwick is now a murder investigation.

What Happened?

Berwick Police were called to the home of Christopher Utt, at 321 School Street, for a report of two people who had been shot. When the officers arrived, they found that Utt, 25, and Edward Bateau, 41, of Berwick had both suffered gunshot wounds. Police have not commented on whether the two men know each other or what Bateau was doing at the residence.

What Were the Men's Conditions When Police Arrived?

Badeau was transported to Wentworth-Douglas Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, where he later died of his injuries. Utt was taken to Portsmouth Medical Center and then to Massachusetts General Hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. At last report, he was in serious condition.

An autopsy on Badeau resulted in the Chief Medical Examiner ruling his death a homicide.

Has Anyone Been Arrested?

Maine State Police are now assisting Berwick Police in the investigation. So far, police have not commented on the motive for the shootings or if there are any suspects. Officials say there is no danger to the public.
