Bangor Police Department To Hold 8th ‘National Night Out’ Celebration Next Week

Bangor residents are invited to come have dinner with their local law enforcers, as the Bangor Police Department gets ready to join Law Enforcement agencies across the nation for this year's National Night Out event.

According to the National Night Out website, the entire thought behind these events, which take place simultaneously throughout the U.S., is to bring together police and folks from the neighborhoods under positive circumstances.

Originally started in the 1970s and '80s as a way to connect Neighborhood Watch Groups together and with the resources they needed to help keep their neck of the woods a little safer, National Night Out has grown larger, into an opportunity for neighborhoods to come together, as a whole, with each other. And it gives the Police a chance to connect with the community members they help serve and protect.

"National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more. "

Bangor PD's Sgt. Wade Betters says Bangor's event will be taking place Tuesday August 3rd from 6 PM to 8 PM at Second Street Park.

"This is an all-ages, family-style event featuring a wide variety of fun craft activities, lawn games, a bounce house sponsored by Bangor Saving Bank, fresh cotton candy and popcorn, and a free BBQ sponsored by our local Shaw’s Supermarket. Dicks Sporting Goods will be on-site raffling off great prizes, and The Darling’s Ice Cream truck will also be there, working to raise money for the Biker Church aka 'Brick Church.'

While the National Night Out is one of Bangor's larger community events, the Police Department works hard throughout the year to connect with Bangor citizens.

Whether through events like "Coffee With A Cop" and taking part in other community gatherings or through the National Night Out program, Bangor PD does its best to celebrate the good things to balance out the not-so-fun tasks they often have to perform.

Sgt. Betters says to keep your fingers crossed for good weather, as there is no rain date planned for this event.
