Warden Service K9s Located the Couple in the Woods Behind Their Maine Home

Multiple agencies have been searching for 72-year-old Pamela Helmstadter and 82-year-old John Helmstadter after they were reported missing on Wednesday. Thursday afternoon, at around 2:30, Game Warden Jake Voter and his K9 Koda found Pamela in a forested area over a mile from their home. About a half hour later, Game Warden Kayle Hamilton and K9 Ash located John, approximately 200 yards from his wife. He was deceased. Officials say Pamela was severely hypothermic but alert with her dog by her side and was transported to Calais Community Hospital for observation. Her body temperature was 90.7 when she was found, but officials say she was able to tell the Wardens what happened.

Pamela Told Maine Wardens They Had Wandered Off the Trail When John Fell

John and Pamela had gone for a walk with their dogs on Sunday in the woods behind their home, where there is a network of trails. During their walk, they had gotten off one of the trails and John fell. He was unable to get up and, since neither of them had cell phones, Pamela went to get help. She became disoriented in the woods and had given up hope of being found until she saw a Warden Service airplane circling overhead five different times. She told the Wardens that it gave her hope.

The Alexander Couple's Neighbor Reported Them Missing

The couple had been reported missing by a neighbor on Wednesday after they noticed a package on their porch. The neighbor brought the package inside the house on Tuesday and then called the Sheriff's Office on Wednesday when they noticed the package was still in the same place. In addition, one of the dogs was home, but there was no sign of Pamela, John, or the other dog.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
