An Acton man has died from burns he sustained while trying to extinguish an outdoor fire at his home.

The Fire on Ice Road in Acton Appears to Have Started Outside

Volney Spaulding 64, of Acton was injured on Sunday, November 17, 2024. at his residence at 151 Ice Road in Acton.

Woods and a Shed in Acton Were Damaged in the Fire

The State Fire Marshal's Office was called to the home just before 11 am that Sunday to assist the Maine Forest Service with investigating the fire that appeared to have started outdoors. Woods and a shed located nearby had also sustained damage from the fire.

Mr. Spaulding Was Injured As He Tried to Put Out the Blaze

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss says Mr. Spaulding sustained severe burn injuries to his upper body while trying to suppress the fire. He was transported by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland. On Wednesday, the State Fire Marshal's Office was notified that he had passed away.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will determine the cause and manner of his death while the Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
