Mattanawcook Academy ID’s 17 Year Old Killed in a Lowell Crash
Grief counselors will be at Mattanawcook Academy on Monday for students grieving the loss of an incoming senior who died in a crash in Lowell.
What Happened?
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says a 17-year-old girl from Lincoln has died as a result of the crash that happened at approximately 12:24 Friday morning. State Police Troopers responded to a report of the crash on Main Road in Lowell and found three victims. The driver, a 17-year-old boy from East Millinocket, and his front-seat passenger, a 15-year-old girl from Lincoln, were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The 17-year-old girl was riding in the backseat at the time of the crash. She was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel at the scene.
Were There Any Contributing Factors?
The cause of the crash remains under investigation but the initial assessment is that the driver failed to negotiate a turn in the road. Officials say none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts.
Have Police Released the Identities of the Teens?
Paul Austin, Superintendent of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln, released a statement on Friday, identifying the deceased as 17-year-old Cierra McCain, who was about to start her senior year. The school's cafeteria will be open Monday from 3 to 6 for any students who wish to gather. School counselors will be available to listen to any students who wish to talk.
Lowell is located about 15 miles southeast of Howland, Maine.
