A Bucksport Man Allegedly Assaulted a Cop After a Police Chase
A Good Samaritan helped a police officer take a combative Bucksport man into custody after a scuffle that sent the cop to the hospital.
Who Was Arrested?
Devin Obrien, 27, of Bucksport is facing multiple charges:
- Eluding
- Refusing to submit to arrest
- Assault on an officer
- Driving to Endanger
- Operating after suspension with 3 or more priors
- Reckless conduct
- Operating under the influence
- Violation of bail conditions
- Failure to register a vehicle
Obrien was transported to the Penobscot County Jail where he was also found to be out on bail for charges including eluding, reckless conduct, criminal speeding, driving to endanger, and operating after suspension for a similar incident. East Millinocket Police say Obrien's blood alcohol level was allegedly nearly twice the legal limit at the time of his arrest.
What Led Up To His Arrest?
It was shortly after noon on Friday, October 20th, when Officer Edson with the East Millinocket Police Department saw an older model Ford Crown Victoria on Poplar Street being driven very erratically. He tried to get the vehicle to pull over but the driver took off, allegedly driving recklessly on several residential streets. At one point, Obrien allegedly did a U-turn in the road and drove directly at the officer's cruiser. Eventually, the vehicle stopped in the area of the sports fields near Granite Street School.
When Officer Edson tried to take Obrien into custody, he ended up tackling him as Obrien tried to get into the police cruiser. Police say the suspect became combative and uncooperative and an altercation ensued during which Obrien allegedly struck Officer Edson in the face several times, causing bleeding and injuries. At one point, the officer pulled his taser to try and subdue Obrien and the two men struggled over it.
How Was He Finally Taken Into Custody?
At this point, a bystander joined into the fight, after watching the incident from his home. The two men worked together to free the Taser from Obrien's hands, but the citizen reported that Obrien was allegedly also trying to pull the officer's service weapon from its holster. With help from the Good Samaritan, Officer Edson was able to take the suspect into custody.
Officer Edson was treated at Millinocket Regional Hospital for injuries sustained during the altercation.
