A 911 operator was surprised when he found himself talking to a 4-year-old who couldn't figure out his 'take-away math.' The call is precious, Mom's reaction is funny, and the whole call reminds me of a time when a telephone operator sent the cops to my house.

In this video, the little boy is having problems with his math. So what do you do when you need help? You call 911.....right? The operator is very patient with the little boy and probably laughed hard when Mom realized what was going on. I know I did!

But when I saw the video this morning, it reminded me of one summer afternoon when my two oldest sons were 2 and 3. Mike, my oldest, had just started picking up the phone and randomly dialing it. And Dan, my second child, had a habit of getting into things he shouldn't (as all 2-year-olds will). When you tried to take it away from him, he'd scream like he was dying.

That particular morning, Dan had grabbed something he wasn't supposed to have, and I'd chased him into the kitchen. He backed up into a corner and started screaming like his hair was on fire, yelling 'Leave me alone! Leave me alone!' I managed to get whatever-it-was away from him and that's when I realized Mike was on the phone. I hung it up without asking who it was. Apparently it was a telephone operator who became alarmed by what she'd heard.

A few minutes later, I opened my door to find a police officer with my father-in-law standing behind him. (We lived across the driveway from my in-laws) When he told me that the operator had heard a child on the phone and then another child screaming, I quickly explained what had happened. I even invited him to come in and check my kids (who, of course, were standing behind me). My father-in-law, meanwhile, was outright laughing at this point.

The Brewer officer glanced down at my kids and also started laughing. He told me he had a 2-year-old at home and totally understood how dramatic they can be over the smallest thing. I thanked him for checking (after all, what if it HAD been someone abusing their child?) and went back inside to answer a million questions from my kids. (MOM! Why were the POLICE here? What did you DO?) Have I ever let them forget this little adventure? Obviously not!
