The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has started open water fishing season early this year, due to the mild temperatures.

It's been a weird winter, with warmer temperatures and much less snow than we normally get. Because of that, the ice is out on many waterways and the open water is tempting sportsmen and women to dig out their fishing poles and check their tackle supplies. Plus, the shorter ice fishing season has frustrated anglers who weren't able to get their winter fix.

So the IF&W has decided to move up the start date for Open Water Fishing season. All waterways that normally would begin the season on April 1st are now open today! March 17th is the first day of open water fishing for those regions, so you can drop your line for St. Patrick's Day!

Wardens do caution, however, that the water could still be dangerously cold, so you should be careful. Wear a life vest if you're going out in a boat. Dress appropriately and limit the amount of time you spend standing in the water.

I don't know about you, but I'm very excited about this! I'm new to fishing and it's quickly become an obsession. I can't wait to pull in that first small-mouth of the season!
