You’ve heard the expression "keep it between the lines." Well, that applies to dogs driving as well. He or she didn’t get that memo.

And the name and gender of the dog are being withheld to protect the dog from being bothered, hassled, or bullied.

The story starts on the morning before Christmas.

The power is out at a woman’s home in Waldo County. No coffee maker. No phone charger because the power is out. So she decides to drive to Dunkin' for coffee. Her dog joins her in the car. She starts the engine to warm up the car and charge her phone.

But she forgot the phone in the house.

She left the car running, the dog in the car, and returned to her home to get the phone.

She came back out of the house a minute later and the car was gone.

Her first reaction:

Someone stole my car and my dog

Then I noticed my car, nose down in the ditch across the road, and still running.

Guess the dog got impatient and moved the gear shift into drive

Neither the dog nor the car got far. But the dog drove the car out of the dooryard and into the ditch.

No injuries, but the car needed to be towed out. The driver, who still hadn’t had her morning coffee, thanked the "nice young cops and wrecker that managed to help and not snicker – too much."

The story was posted to the Waldo County Dispatchers Facebook group page.

And the comments rolled in.

Oh bless that impatient pup. So very glad everything turned out ok.

I could totally see our dog doing that same thing. Thanks for the laughs.

Including comments from the owner of the car and dog:

I don’t think I’ll let him drive again  He can’t see over the steering wheel,

No telling what would have happened if his legs were any longer.

And many comments from others:

This could happen to any one of us. Wouldn’t choose him as a designated driver though

Remember this happened on Christmas Eve:

Over the river and through the woods, I guess he wanted to go to Grandma’s house.

The clever comments continued to roll in:

Oh sure, blame it on the dog

No joke. You have to tell us what your insurance said – please.

Thankfully a happy ending. And all is well with the dog, the lady, the power, and the coffee.
