Comedian Bob Newhart has finally won an Emmy! After he created one of the most revered sitcoms ever and found success with another sitcom that eventually tied into the first, it took "The Big Bang Theory" to gain the recognition he so richly deserves.

Sunday night, Bob Newhart received the award for his role as children's entertainer Professor Proton on the hit CBS series. It's sad that it took til he's 84 for Hollywood to stand up and recognize the comic genius that is Bob Newhart.

I remember watching the original "Bob Newhart Show." Bob played a psychiatrist with a bunch of hilariously dysfunctional patients, with Suzanne Pleshette playing his beautiful and always-level-headed wife. It was hilarious!

Many years later, Bob did it again in the 1980's playing an innkeeper on the show "Newhart." The series produced one of the iconic phrases of the decade ("This is my brother Daryl and my other brother Daryl") And ended with one of the most hilarious twists ever when the original Bob woke up next to his wife, Suzanne Pleshette, and said he'd dreamed the entire second series!

But it took playing an aging children's performer to the wacky scientists of "The Big Bang  Theory" to finally bring Bob the acclaim he's earned over many decades in the business. Congratulations, Bob! And thanks for the lifetime of laughter!
