While the ski areas in Maine and New Hampshire in no way rival the ski resorts of the western United States, we do have some decent skiing here in New England.  There is a reason why a slew of Olympians have come from our region.

Of course, when it is all said and done, our ski areas are really more about having fun with your friends and family.

And, when it comes to affordable, family friendly resorts, one of the best is Bridgton's Shawnee Peak.

Now the resort, which was purchased by Boyne Resorts last year, will get a new name.  Well, sort of...

According to WCSH 6, Shawnee Peak will change its name back to Pleasant Mountain.  The article explains that, from the late 1930s until 1988, the resort operated under the name Pleasant Mountain.

What was the reason for the change?  Is it just the latest business / brand to migrate their name away from Native American names?  That does not appear to be the case.

A press release from Boyne said, in part:

This season, we return to the original name of our ski area—the name it carried when the first trail was cut in 1936—to celebrate the mountain and the ski area's history, as well as to mark a new beginning as we look forward to the future of Pleasant Mountain.  Pleasant Mountain supporters were the catalyst for our change. They remained vigilant, vocal, and enthusiastic.  Their opinions were validated when feedback gathered in a spring survey was overwhelmingly in support of bringing back the original name.

For those who don't know, the mountain where the resort is located is named Pleasant Mountain.  The piece of land retained the name even when the resort was renamed Shawnee Peak.

Of course, you may not call it Shawnee Peak OR Pleasant Mountain.  Some people just call it the "mountain of love" because the lights on the trails appear to spell out LOVE.

Boyne Resorts owns three other New England resorts - Sugarloaf and Sunday River in Maine and Loon Mountain Resort in New Hampshire.

You can keep up to date on the resort by following it on Facebook.
