The Corner Store in Bangor underwent a bit of a renovation recently. An area inside was transformed to make way for some new merchandise, as the store was recently granted an Agency Liquor Store license.

Owner Susan Price Stephenson, who purchased the business in November of last year from her father (he'd run the store since 1991) said the process to apply for the special license was a long one which included the application, paperwork, special presentations, and hearings on the matter.

"The 'Agency Liquor License is actually something that's very, very hard to get. And we're honored that we were selected."

"I think what really helped us is that Damon's moved over closer to the mall and it's really sort of left a void over on the West side of Bangor."

Stephenson says there are a limited number of Agency Liquor Licenses, and when Damon's closed, one became available and open to the public for stores to apply to, and so they did.

"You know, The Corner Store is close to a few different neighborhoods. We're close to downtown. We're close to the highway."

"It was just something I really wanted to do for the store and for the neighborhood. And we're just excited to just diversify the store. We're trying to have as many offerings as we can have in a small space in a neighborhood store. "

Stephenson says getting the special license is something she's wanted for the store for a while now, and it's not the only change she has planned.

Stephenson says they've started selling Bangor High gear.

They're also hoping to upgrade and expand their deli.

"We have a great deli. We have a lot of loyal followers. We're looking into potential delivery and some online ordering."

While some things are changing and being updated, the heart of the store still remains the same.

"We still have the same great people working there. It's a great staff and a great neighborhood. Regardless of if you live 2 blocks away or 2 miles away, everyone's welcome. And we're just proud of how we're evolving."

The General Stores Of Downeast Maine

These are the long-time general stores that are spread throughout downeast Maine. The stores that your grandparents picked up milk, beer, and that night's dinner at. For years they had been filled with things like fly paper, clothes, beef jerky, and that morning's newspaper. Now, you stop by for that slice of breakfast pizza, a tasty fried chicken sandwich for lunch, gas,and a handful of lottery tickets.

They're an important part of Maine's heritage, and their numbers are starting to dwindle. But we still frequent them to pick up the day's necessities and to keep up on town gossip.

They may not be owned by the original owners, and they may not look the same as they did years and years ago. But that same hometown feeling is there, the minute you set foot on their wooden floors. More than likely the same wooden floors that your grandparents set foot on.
