Maine Wardens have recovered the body of a 17-year-old who drowned in the Saco River.

Officials say Steel Crawford of Freeport was swimming with friends at Pleasant Point Park in Buxton. Witnesses said he had been swinging on a rope swing, when he let go of it and landed awkwardly in deep water. He never surfaced. Wardens found the body, at around 7:00 Friday evening, in an area down river of the Route 202 bridge and upriver of the Skelton Dam, where water depths are in excess of 50 feet.

Assisting in the search were the Buxton Police and Fire Departments, Saco and Standish Fire Departments, York County Emergency Management Agency, Maine State Police, and Fire personnel from Kennebunk, Goodwin, and Hollis.
