After the release of the song, McGraw addressed the lyric, ‘Portland, Maine. I don’t know where that is, and I don’t want to know.’
Explaining that he absolutely knows where Maine’s largest city is and has even been there—saying he loves it—McGraw clarified that the line is simply a metaphor about the fear of moving on after a breakup. He added that the character in the song is unwilling to go anywhere emotionally, and that ‘Portland, Maine’ was chosen because it sings so well in the track.
In the 2014 interview, McGraw said that ‘Portland, Maine’ was his favorite song on the album.
The track was later recorded by its co-writer, Donovan Woods, in 2015, and a new version featuring Jordan Davis was released in 2025.
