Six people were injured in a huge fire Sunday night, that involved a number of buildings on Hancock Street in Rumford.

The fire was called in at around 11:00 Sunday night at 105 Hancock Street and quickly spread to other buildings. In that portion of town, the apartment buildings sit very close together. WGME-TV reports that the three multi-family buildings were destroyed.

Several people were encouraged to jump from their windows, when firefighters were unable to reach them, because of the intensity of the blaze. Six people were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and injuries sustained when they jumped from the building. Three of those people were listed in critical condition. No firefighters were hurt in the incident.

Firefighters remain on the scene today, putting out hot spots, and monitoring the remaining buildings that they say may still collapse. The Red Cross is helping the victims.
