The annual homecoming bonfire at Bangor High School was canceled Thursday night because of a "safety issue."

Parents received an automated call from Bangor Superintendent Betsy Webb shortly before 8 p.m. saying students were being sent home from the bonfire, which was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Bangor Police Department Lt. Catherine Rumsey said Thursday night police were made aware of a comment or a post on social media "indicating there was going to be trouble at the bonfire."

School officials made the decision to cancel the event. Police assisted in removing students from the area.

Police reportedly have arrested a juvenile from Bangor on a terrorizing charge.
