Suspicious Package At Augusta Post Office [UPDATE]
The post office in Augusta was been shut down as police investigated a suspicious package.
Centralmaine.com reports several law enforcement agencies were called to the Edmund S. Muskie Federal Building Monday morning. By 11 a.m., the building that sits at the corner of Sewall Street and Western Avenue was closed, and Sewall Street was shut down to traffic.
The initial report was of an 'unattended package' and the post office was evacuated. An inspection of the item prompted police to consider it suspicious and all the other offices were evacuated, as well.
The bomb squad was called in to investigate. After about 3 hours of investigation, including the sheltering-in-place of a nearby school, it was determined that the package was empty. Officials were concerned that it may have been another pipe bomb, like those sent to several public figures recently.
