An Indian Island man faces several felony charges after police say he held his girlfriend captive at gunpoint earlier this month.

Dustin Francis, 34, felony faces charges of kidnapping, domestic violence aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, reckless conduct and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

Police on Monday (Nov. 23) afternoon arrested Francis upon his release from Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Police first encountered Francis on the night of Nov. 7, when they responded to a report of an injured man lying the street on Parkview Avenue. That man was Francis, who told police he had been attacked by unknown individuals. Francis had a gunshot wound, which police later determined to be self-inflicted. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.

While officers were on scene with Francis, his girlfriend called 911 to report that she had escaped her residence after being assaulted and held at gunpoint. She reported that gunshots were fired within the residence while she was held captive. Multiple bullet holes -- including one that struck a neighboring building -- were found within her residence.

Francis is being held at the Penobscot County Jail awaiting arraignment.
