Maine’s Next Round Of Seasonal Hunting Begins
Honestly, a lot of the reason I being this up, is because I know a lot of folks out there don't realize that in Maine, you can pretty much hunt year-round. Now, almost all die hard sportsman and outdoorsy types know this to be true. But a lot of the folks that don't engage in this type of outdoor winter sport, may not.
So yes....if you decide to go snowshoeing in the woods out a ways.... You may want to consider donning a bit of blaze orange, just to be on the safe side. When I used to live in southern Maine, I was blown away the first time I heard there was a spring turkey hunt. In my naive mind, I thought hunting was strictly a fall thing. Far from it!
Bird hunters are closing out seasons for ruffed grouse, bobwhite quail and pheasant, but that wraps up on December 31st. It's also the last day of the season for small game animals like gray squirrels and raccoons, according to the Bangor Daily News.
And then of course, new ones are just getting started. Coyote night hunting started on December 18th and goes til August 31st. The bobcat hunt, a popular season with some Maine guides, began on December 1st and goes straight through February 21st. And also, the snowshoe hare season is underway.
So as you can see, there are plenty of reasons for hunters to be out doing their thing right now. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be out doing yours. My wife and I are avid snowshoers, and lord knows folks up this way love their cross-country skiing. But it's good to keep in mind, that hunters are also out enjoying their favorite sport, so dress accordingly!
And see you in the woods!
