The Largest Fish Ever Caught in Maine is a Real Beast!
Fishing is a way of life around my house, and I've seen some big fish, but nothing like this beast of a lake trout.
Fishing is a Passion for Many Mainers, Me Included
There's nothing like a great day of fishing. I never enjoyed it until a few years ago when my husband guaranteed I would catch a fish if I went with him. He didn't lie. I've been hooked (pun intended) ever since.
We typically fish for bass, although catching any fish is a win. I'm excited when I reel in a 3 to 3.5-pound largemouth, which would look like a sardine next to the record-holder, which was caught in Maine.

Maine's Largest Fish by Weight Was a Lake Trout Caught in Oxford County
Erik Poland of Andover holds the state record for the largest fish by weight. Erik was trolling with a DB Smelt lure in 2020 on Richardson Lake in Oxford County when he landed the biggest lake trout I've ever seen. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife reports the record stands with Erik's 39.2-pound fish, which measured 44" long. That's crazy!
I wonder if the DB Smelt company called him for an endorsement? That's a pretty awesome result on their lure.

Congratulations to Erik Poland for still holding the state record. I'm sure it's a day he'll never forget and a story that he tells over and over.
And good luck to all the anglers this summer. Someone will eventually break that amazing record with an even bigger fish. Maybe it will be you.
