The incident occurred during a conversation about free speech, in a school district that's been under scrutiny for alleged Title IX violations.

RSU #19 serves the Newport area, including the communities of Corinna, Dixmont, Etna, Hartland, Palmyra, Plymouth, and St. Albans.

In a post on the department's Facebook page, Superintendent Michael Hammer posted a letter informing community members about a Title IX complaint filed by the United States Department of Education.

Maine School Superintendent Replies to Title IX Complaint

According to Hammer, the complaint alleges that the district discriminated against female students, on the basis of sex, by allowing a male student to join the girls' cheerleading squad and use the girls' locker room and bathroom at Nokomis Regional Middle School.

Hammer went on to say that the school's cheerleading team is co-ed, so he doesn't understand the reason for the complaint.

He also said he didn't have any information about bathroom and locker room usage, but the district doesn't have a policy about it.

Maine School Board Meeting Disrupted by a Heated Discussion

On Tuesday night, March 10, 2026, a school board meeting grew heated during a discussion about a student who News Center Maine says was suspended over comments made toward a transgender student.

As a student spoke at the podium, during Tuesday night's meeting, an argument broke out between several adults, including a man who calls himself the 'Truth Slinger.'

There's no information about whether the 'Truth Slinger' was involved in the altercation, but he was part of another heated school board meeting in Lincoln in September, 2025.

We reached out to the Newport Police Chief David Wintle, who confirmed that the department is looking into a report of an assault at the meeting and that the incident is still under investigation.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
