Maine Police Fatally Shoot a Man Who Allegedly Killed His Brother

A man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of his brother in 2022 has been shot and killed by Maine State Police.

Shay McKenna, 28, was sought by police on an arrest warrant for a violation of bail conditions when he was fatally shot this week in Rangeley Plantation.

What Led Up To the Police-Involved Shooting?

Maine State Police got an arrest warrant on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, for Shay McKenna after he failed to show up for his arraignment. McKenna was charged with manslaughter for the 2022 shooting death of his brother. Officials say he had allegedly been seen with a firearm that he was prohibited from possessing. An investigation led authorities to a location in Rangeley Plantation, where they learned McKenna was staying. They got a search warrant and the Maine State Police Tactical Team was activated to assist in taking McKenna into custody.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says when officials arrived, they found McKenna hiding in a van. The Maine State Police Crisis Negotiation Team advised the suspect that he was under arrest but when McKenna got out of the van, he wearing a ballistic vest and carrying a rifle. This resulted in Trooper Jeffrey Parks confronting and shooting the suspect. Shay McKenna died at the scene.

Trooper Parks will be on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. This incident will be investigated by the Maine Attorney General's Office.

When Was McKenna's Brother Fatally Shot?

Shay McKenna was charged with manslaughter for the death of his brother, Drew McKenna, of Rumford. Police said the two brothers were arguing when Shay allegedly shot his brother in December 2022 at a home on Route 2 in Rumford. Drew died the next day from his injuries. Shay was taken to the Oxford County Jail, where bail was set at $200,000.
