When you hear about the good things that people do when bad things are going on all around them, it makes you smile and say “Mainers would do that.:

Example, the major league blizzard(s) that Buffalo, New York has had within the past few weeks and the good news stories coming out about neighbors helping neighbors and the community stepping up to help wherever they could, again “Mainers do that.”

The story about the injured football player on Monday Night Football who went into cardiac arrest on the field, and a charity he supports and helps raise money for blew up with millions and millions of dollars in contributions in the first day. “That happens in Maine too.”

So when I saw a recent survey that basically said how many would actually stop and help a neighbor if they saw their car had broken down, when I read the numbers from Maine I shook my head and said “That certainly isn’t the Maine that I know and have experienced.”

Surprisingly, 1 in 5 Mainers admitted they would NOT stop to help and would drive on by, if they saw a neighbor stranded in their broken down car. I guess, the good news is that 4 in 5 of us, would indeed stop to try to help.

Sure, there is always one. And four in five would stop, that is 80%. Almost as good as you could possibly expect.

Except that the nationwide survey said that in Nebraska 94% of would stop. Nothing against Corn Huskers, but it still surprises me that Maine isn't number one in the survey.

But thankfully we don’t live in Mississippi, where only 60% of people would stop to assist, the other 40% would speed on by their neighbor. That is some southern charm for you right there.

Personally I slid off of an icy backroad one winter a while back, and as I waited for the tow truck to come and pull me out of the ditch, numerous people stopped to make sure I was alright and that help was on the way. And these were not my neighbors, just fellow Mainers.

Here's the survey results, but I’m going to keep on believing that Maine is as generous and kind as any state in America, and doesn’t deserve to be anywhere but Number One on the national list of ‘Being Neighborly’
