Two Maine Cities Named Among Best in New England for Retirees
While we know that Maine is ‘The Way Life Should Be,’ two of our cities were recently named among the best places for retirees.
Listen, we get it—Maine is called ‘Vacationland,’ and when you think of a place to vacation, you might not automatically think of a place to retire. But the truth is, Maine’s full of incredible spots that are perfect for both relaxing getaways and peaceful retirements.
That said, how do we determine what makes one city better than another when it comes to retirement?
World Atlas recently released a list of the '8 Best Towns in New England for Retirees,' highlighting places that offer natural beauty, cultural attractions, and quality healthcare. Their selections focus on towns that balance affordability, charm, and amenities—perfect for retirees seeking scenic living with access to city conveniences.

Now that we’ve asked the big question, let’s get to the answer: which two cities in Maine were recently named among the best in our region for retirees?
According to World Atlas and their recent report, ‘8 Best Towns in New England for Retirees,’ the two Maine cities that made the list are Bangor and Lewiston.
Bangor, Maine’s third most populous city, is an affordable and scenic option for retirees, with nearly 20% of its population over the age of 65.
World Atlas continues that Bangor’s lower median home value, along with its natural beauty and welcoming community, makes it an attractive place for seniors to settle down.
Lewiston offers retirees a tight-knit community, quality healthcare, and affordable living, with home values averaging around $300,000—well below the state median.
As said by World Atlas, Lewiston’s blend of affordability, access to medical care, and overall quality of life makes it an appealing option for retirement in Maine.

And there you have it! If you’re looking for the best cities in New England for retirees, Bangor and Lewiston are right up there with the best of the best.
