According to the company’s website, Marin Skincare began in 2017 after its founders struggled to find products that helped with eczema, psoriasis, and dry or damaged skin without harsh or irritating ingredients.
While studying biomedical engineering at the University of Maine, they connected with lobster scientist Dr. Bob Bayer, whose research on a lobster glycoprotein led them to test a glycoprotein-rich formula that they say helped support skin barrier repair.

By late summer 2017, the founders said the glycoprotein-rich formula had begun improving dry, rough and flaky skin within days, with itching, redness and other symptoms fading over the following weeks.
Although they had planned to continue their biomedical engineering studies, they said the results led them to build Marin from the ground up, including writing grants, entering pitch competitions, developing formulas and creating a supply chain for lobster glycoproteins.
Marin launched its Soothing Hydration Cream in fall 2020 as a gentle, glycoprotein-rich product inspired by what its founders said they wished they had during their own struggles with eczema.
After national news coverage, viral videos, and strong customer response, the company quickly sold out, expanded its reach, and began scaling from a homegrown startup into a nationally recognized skincare brand.
In 2023, Marin Skincare rebranded to better reflect its Maine roots, its connection to the lobster industry, and its use of upcycled glycoproteins.
The updated brand identity was designed to tell that story more clearly while setting the stage for new products and future growth.

And there you have it! If you haven’t heard of them yet, Marin Skincare has been growing here in Maine for more than half a decade.
