Maine State Police have released the identity of a child killed by a gunshot in Lewiston.

Maine Police Have Released More Information About a Young Lewiston Shooting Victim

Jasper Smith, 4, of Lewiston, was pronounced dead just after 7:00 a.m. on May 17, 2025.


Lewiston Police were called to apartment 2 at 93 Pierce Street  just before 5:00 that morning for a report of a child with a gunshot wound to the head.

Maine Medical Examiner Hasn't Revealed the Lewiston Child's Manner of Death

Lewiston police officers, members of the fire department, and United Ambulance Service responded and transferred Jasper to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was pronounced deceased.

An autopsy determined the child's cause of death was the gunshot. The Office of the Medical Examiner has not released the manner of death, whether it was accidental or something else.

Maine State Police Release Information About the Gun Used in the Lewiston Shooting

The investigation into the incident revealed that a 9 mm handgun was found in the home, registered to Robert McCoy, 36. Officials say several family members were in the home when emergency personnel responded.
