Wanna Walk Weirdly In Downtown Bangor? There’s Group Who Does Just That!
Some people in this world are ok with being normal.
That's totally fine.
But others, well, others enjoy being a little weird and bringing smiles to the faces of those around them.
And nowadays, a little weird can be a good thing, especially if it involves not only making yourself feel joyful but helping to spread that joy to others.
That concept is at the heart of a cool little movement called Wierd Walking Wednesdays, which has popped up in Downtown Bangor recently.
You may have seen the group of folks dressed as inflatable dinosaurs walking throughout the city appear in your social media feeds within the last month or so.
If you saw it and thought to yourself, "Well, that looks like fun!" or "Man, am I bummed out I missed that!" well, you're in luck. The organization is offering folks another opportunity to get all dolled up and walk. The next "Prom-enade" is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, May 7th at 5:30 PM.
"You’re cordially invited for an early evening, one-mile weird walkin’ wander through Downtown Bangor whilst dressed to the nines. We heard that some folk wanted to take a walk but had to work mid-day, so we’ve added an evening walk...and we made it fancy! It’s a fine time for a PROM-enade to celebrate the season when many teens are dressing up for formals. Whether you’re sporting that fine powder blue tux or simply a carnation in your lapel, we’ll be taking a fancy-dress walk followed by some fancy behavior in West Market Square. (And be sure to practice that Beauty Queen Wave!)"
What exactly do you have to do to take part in this silly spectacle?
It's pretty simple: Don your fanciest attire (although we would recommend some sensible footwear underneath those suits and dresses, as you will be hoofing it!), join up with others of like mind in West Market Square, and walk a mile together while helping to spread smiles and good cheer along the way.
When you go your separate ways at the end, everyone can leave with a warm and fuzzy feeling that everyone has helped make this little corner of Bangor a little more fun-filled, if even just for an afternoon.

The events are organized by the Downtown Bangor Partnership. Executive Director, Besty Lundy, says there will be more walks planned for the future.
"Our Events Committee was talking about how we did not have the capacity to add a bunch of big events but that we did want to do some fun, easy community engagement activities. Monique was talking about something with a health benefit, like how we should all walk a mile a day, and then Autumn Tierney (Board Director, owner of Three Graces Tattoo, and Downtown resident) suggested making it fun by dressing up and voila, an activity was born."
"The March-a-Saurus was our first walk and about a dozen people showed up. We honestly thought it might be just the three of us but were thrilled that there were other people out there looking for something whimsical and joy-filled."
"The reaction was so awesome. Just really positive vibes all around. I would see someone up ahead walking all serious, maybe on their way to work and they would see the herd of dinos and just smile. Literally everyone smiled. They took pictures. Cars honked and waved. It just felt great."
"For the next walk, I can't think of what else to add except that people can dress up as Weird Al or one of the characters in his videos (think Like a Surgeon) or even just 80s style. We'll have a set list to play from our boom box."
