According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, emergency dispatchers in the area started receiving reports about a red SUV driving in an unsafe manner along I-95 in Auburn. Authorities say that callers reported seeing the vehicle weave in and out of traffic while traveling at a high rate of speed.

Troopers made their way to the location, but at first, they could not find the SUV in question. Shortly after, they encountered the driver in the southbound lane of the interstate, near Lewiston, at mile marker 83. Authorities tried to get the driver to stop, but she refused. So they used other methods.

"Spike strips were deployed around mile marker 68 in New Gloucester, and the vehicle’s tires started to deflate. The vehicle came to a stop before the toll plaza southbound, and a high-risk stop was initiated. This caused southbound traffic to come to a complete stop. "

Once the vehicle was safely stopped, and traffic would resume without risk, authorities arrested the driver, Carla Williams, a 51-year-old woman from Homewood, Alabama.
