The new rates for riding a ferry went into effect on October 1st, so make sure you have enough money for your trip.

It's been a lengthy process, with Maine Department of Transportation officials asking for plenty of input from regular ferry users. There have been public hearings, conversations with community members, and island visits by Maine DOT staff. Now that the rulemaking process is officially over, the new rates are in place.

Maine DOT Commissioner Bruce Van Note said, in a media release, that he wants to thank everyone involved in the process. "We feel this new rate structure strikes a reasonable balance," Van Note went on to say, "considering all of the various and sometimes competing concerns we heard from those who rely on the Maine State Ferry Service."
